If the partner agrees then they will be engaged. The situation were they pledge to be married calls engagement.
The boy becomes groom and the girl becomes bride on the wedding day.
The wedding day passes. The boy becomes a husband. The girl becomes a wife.
When the boy dies the girl become a widow.
When the girl dies the boy become widower.
