The Past Perfect Continuous Tense

The Past Perfect Continuous Tense (прошедшее совершенное длительное время) — выражает действие, которое началось до определённого момента в прошлом и продолжалось до этого определённого момента.

Образуется the Past Perfect Continuous Tense с помощью вспомогательного глагола to have в форме прошедшего времени + причастия прошедшего времени Participle II глагола to be + причастия настоящего времени Participle I смыслового глагола.

had been + ing (Participle I)

 

Affirmative (утвердительные) Negative (отрицательные) Interrogative (вопросительные)
I had been playing. I had not been playing. Had I been playing?
He had been playing. I had not been playing. Had I been playing?
She had been playing. She had not been playing. Had she been playing?
It had been playing. It had not been playing. Had it been playing?
We had been playing. We had not been playing. Had we been playing?
You had been playing. You had not been playing. Had you been playing?
They had been playing. They had not been playing. Had they been playing?

Общепринятые сокращения:
had been → ‘d been
had not been → hadn’t been

Примеры:
I had been playing Starcraft for two hours when Sean came. → I‘d been playing Starcraft for two hours when Sean came.

Очень часто the Past Perfect Continuous Tense используется с since и for:
I had been reading the book for two hours when mother came yesterday. Я читал книгу уже два часа, когда пришла мама вчера.
I had been reading the book since dusk when mother came in the morning. Я читал книгу с вечера, когда пришла мама вчера.
